Can You Do Virtual Therapy Out of State?

Virtual therapy has made it easier than ever to get mental health support, whether you’re at home, traveling, or living in a different part of the country from your therapist. But a common question arises:
Can you do virtual therapy out of state?

The Short Answer: It Depends on the State and the Therapist

In the U.S., therapists are licensed by individual states. That means most therapists are only legally allowed to provide therapy to clients located in the same state where they are licensed, even if the sessions are held virtually

For example, if your therapist is licensed in New York, you typically need to be physically located in New York at the time of your virtual session.

Why Licensing Matters

Each state sets its own rules for mental health professionals to ensure quality care and ethical standards. These licensing laws are designed to protect you and uphold the professionalism of the field.

Therapists are trained to follow these guidelines, and they’ll typically confirm your location before beginning treatment and may check again if you’re traveling.

Are There Exceptions?

Yes, in some cases:

  • Temporary Practice Laws: Some states allow short-term therapy across state lines under specific circumstances.
  • Multi-State Licensure: Some therapists hold licenses in multiple states and can provide care in all the states where they’re licensed.
  • Interstate Compacts (like PSYPACT): Some states participate in agreements that allow licensed psychologists to practice across state borders.

It’s always best to check with your therapist—or your virtual therapy platform—to confirm whether they can legally offer care in your current location.

What If You Move or Travel Frequently?

Let your therapist know if you’re planning a move or extended travel. They may be able to:

  • Maintain continuity of care by being licensed in your new location
  • Help you find a licensed provider in your new state
  • Work within temporary exceptions when possible
