September marks Suicide Prevention Month. It is a time to recognize a deeply personal and difficult topic that touches far more lives than we often realize. Many of us have been impacted by suicide in some way, whether directly or indirectly. It’s something that can live quietly in our communities, our homes, our relationships, and often in our minds.
This month is not about having all the answers. It’s about making room for conversation, reflection, and connection. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to tiptoe around the hard stuff. We can talk about mental health, despair, and what it means to keep going. We can ask, listen, support, and share without shame or silence.
For some, this month may bring up memories of someone lost. For others, it might highlight a season of struggle they never thought they’d survive. And for many, it could simply be a quiet acknowledgment of how fragile life can feel sometimes.
If any of this resonates with you, I want to gently remind you:
You’re allowed to talk about what hurts.
You’re allowed to seek support.
And you’re allowed to not know what to say or feel.
Sometimes the path to healing begins with just one honest moment. One safe space where you can let your guard down. That moment may look like a conversation with a trusted friend. It might be journaling, crying in your car, or reaching out for professional help. There’s no single “right” way to move through pain, but support can make all the difference.
If you’re supporting someone else, know that your presence doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t need profound words. You just need to show up. Ask how they’re doing and truly listen. Let them feel seen, even in their silence.
And if you’re wondering how to help, consider this:
- Start the conversation.
- Normalize talking about suicide.
- Learn the warning signs.
- Check in with the strong friend.
- Offer your time, your ears, your heart.
If you or someone you love is struggling, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 for free and confidential support.
We never know what someone is carrying. This month, and every month, let’s hold space for the stories we don’t always see. Let’s replace silence with compassion and disconnection with care.
If you’re looking for a safe space to talk through what you’re experiencing or holding, therapy can help. At AllOne Therapy, we offer trauma-informed, confidential care when and if you’re ready.
